When I got married, I decided to take my husband’s last name. For one, I thought Darcy O’Daniel just flowed nicely.
But also, that made my initials D. O. which the ambitious, overachieving, workaholic “do-er” in me absolutely loved. Looking back, it’s no wonder I spent some time in therapy learning to separate myself from work and my business…
After committing to clockworking my private practice, I slowly began to accept that “doing all the things” was not the path to sustainable business growth.
What followed was a couple years of setting up systems and processes, delegating more purposefully and with the right kind of supports for our team, and learning to let go.
In The Clockwork System, we talk about the 4Ds when categorizing how we spend our working time.
One of the 4Ds is “doing” and when working towards an ideal mix of the 4Ds, most companies should have approximately 80% of their entire working time dedicated to the “doing” of the tasks.
Two important items to note about that are:
1) That does not mean that I, or any business owner, have to be spending 80% of our time in the “doing” work type.
2) My “doing” tasks are much different than my staff therapists’ “doing” tasks – and they should be; we have different roles!
Okay – so we have “DO” to get things started, but where do we go from there?
Well, I think most therapists want to ‘do right’ for their clients. They want to ‘do good’ in the world. They themselves want to ‘do better’ as their experience grows. As I kept considering these phrases and the underlying sentiments, the word “well” struck me.
“Well” can mean many things:
So that is how the name “DO Well” was born.
